The original Nittany Lion was sculpted by Heinz Warneke. The masterpiece was commissioned through a gift from the Penn State senior class of 1943. And so, Penn State's mascot lost its mane. The Nittany Lion is based on the mountain lions that roamed the hills and valleys of Centre County, Pennsylvania.
